Self-Portrait re (over?) worked

I attempted to get rid of the chipmunk cheek, which I did, but in the process I overworked it a bit. As I mentioned in an earlier post, acrylic dries darker than it is when you first apply it, so I find it very difficult to match the color and correct tone. I couldn't do it on this painting, so I had to adjust all the color on the face. But it is a good exercise, because I need to figure out how to do that.

I like the before best, stuffed cheek and all, what about you?

  1. I like the second one. I think it would be better if you smiled.

  2. A couple of reasons why I'm not smiling - 1) It's really hard to sit and smile into a mirror for hours while I paint myself - it's hard enough just looking at myself at all in the mirror for hours :) and 2) I don't really like many of the portraits I see with the subject smiling - it usually looks stiff to me. I think you have to be an incredible painter to capture smiling faces well.

    1. I think this one is the best and the cheeks are not as chipmonkish. It is a small detail but I would like to see your shoulders going down, it looks like a head sitting on a shelf. Keep doing it, the self portraits. One thing to try is having dramatic light and/or making your face be in an environment.

    2. Haha!! It does look that, I didn't see it until now. I actually did have light that was pretty dramatic, but when I went in the second time I struggled with the skin tone. I'm going to do some more portraits.
